EFCC Arrests Aviation Security Officer, Two Others Over Alleged ₦4.4bn Gold Smuggling at Kano Airport

By Peace Erewunmi

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three suspects, including an aviation security officer, over an alleged attempt to smuggle gold valued at more than ₦4.4 billion through Kano airport.

According to the anti-graft agency, the operation was carried out following surveillance and intelligence gathering aimed at curbing illegal export of mineral resources.

The EFCC alleged that one of the suspects, an aviation security official, attempted to move approximately 22.2 kilograms of unprocessed gold through the airport without detection.

Investigators said the arrest led to the identification and detention of two additional suspects believed to be connected to the transaction.

The commission stated that the case forms part of broader efforts to strengthen enforcement against illicit movement of mineral resources and financial crimes through Nigerian airports.

Authorities noted that investigations remain ongoing and that all recovered items would be subjected to further examination.

The EFCC added that the suspects would be charged in court after completion of investigations.

As of the time of filing this report, the suspects remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until the legal process is concluded.
