The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered and arrested a suspected ex-military officer accused of impersonating its operatives to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspect was allegedly parading himself as an EFCC official, using the claim to gain access to victims and extort money under false pretences.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect reportedly presented fake credentials and identities suggesting affiliation with the anti-graft agency in order to deceive individuals facing financial or legal issues.

The EFCC said the arrest followed credible intelligence and multiple complaints from victims who had been defrauded by individuals claiming to be operatives of the commission.

The commission explained that the suspect’s actions undermined public trust in law enforcement institutions and warned Nigerians to be vigilant when dealing with individuals claiming to represent government agencies.

It further advised members of the public to always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be an EFCC officer through official channels before engaging in any form of transaction or cooperation.

As of the time of filing this report, the suspect is expected to face prosecution after ongoing investigations are concluded.

The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on impersonation and other forms of fraud across the country.
