The Ekiti State Police Command has defended the arrest and prosecution of an abroad-based Nigerian, Ayodele Babatola, who is currently facing allegations of rape in Ado-Ekiti.

According to the police, the case began after a 30-year-old woman reported that she was sexually assaulted in a hotel in Ado-Ekiti after meeting the suspect through social media.

The complainant alleged that she had been in contact with the suspect while he was abroad before they agreed to meet physically in Nigeria.

Police authorities said the suspect was invited for questioning following the complaint, after which the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.

The command stated that preliminary findings led to the suspect being charged to court, where he has since been remanded pending further legal proceedings.

The police also dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting that the arrest was politically motivated, insisting that the action was strictly based on a criminal complaint and evidence gathered during investigation.

They urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information capable of undermining ongoing judicial processes.

As of the time of filing this report, the case remains before the court, while investigations continue.
