Court Remands Blogger Over Alleged Defamatory Claims Against Tony Elumelu

By Peace Erewunmi

A Federal High Court in Lagos has remanded a 19-year-old blogger, Nurenorue John Surpruchi, over alleged cyberstalking and defamatory publications involving businessman and Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Tony Elumelu.

The blogger was arraigned before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, cyberstalking, bullying, and defamation.

According to the prosecution, the defendant allegedly published and circulated false information about Elumelu and his family through social media platforms, leading to widespread public attention.

The prosecution told the court that the publication attracted significant online engagement and allegedly caused reputational damage to the business leader and his family.

During the proceedings, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him.

Following his plea, the prosecution requested that the court remand the defendant pending the hearing of his bail application, stating that it needed time to respond to the application filed by the defence.

Counsel to the defendant urged the court to grant a short adjournment to allow consideration of the bail request.

After hearing both parties, Justice Lewis-Allagoa adjourned the matter until June 19, 2026, for the hearing of the bail application and ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The case has attracted public attention amid ongoing discussions about social media responsibility, cybercrime laws, and freedom of expression in Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, the allegations remain before the court and no determination has been made regarding the defendant’s guilt or innocence.
