UNWarns 35 Million Nigerians Could Face Acute Hunger in Coming Months

By Erewunmi Peace

The United Nations has warned that about 35 million Nigerians may face acute food insecurity in the coming months if urgent humanitarian support is not increased.

The warning was issued by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and partner agencies following assessments of worsening hunger conditions across parts of the country.

According to the report, rising food prices, insecurity, displacement, climate-related challenges, and economic hardship are contributing to the growing risk of hunger, especially in northern Nigeria.

The UN noted that the situation is expected to become more severe during the lean season, a period when food supplies are usually low and many vulnerable households struggle to access adequate nutrition.

States most affected include Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, where insecurity and displacement have continued to disrupt farming activities and food distribution.

Humanitarian agencies also warned that millions of children could face severe acute malnutrition if urgent interventions are not implemented.

The organisation called for increased support from government authorities, international donors, and humanitarian partners to prevent a worsening food crisis.

The development has renewed concerns over food security and the rising cost of living affecting millions of Nigerians.
