By Peace Erewunmi

Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and spokesperson for the Nigerian Armed Forces, has reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted by armed bandits in Katsina State.

The Katsina State Government confirmed the development, describing it as a tragic loss to the state and the nation. According to officials, the retired military officer died while being held by his abductors despite efforts by security agencies and government authorities to secure his release.

Major General Abubakar and his wife were kidnapped in late May while travelling through Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Reports indicated that armed men intercepted their vehicle and took the couple to an unknown location, while their driver escaped with injuries.

In the days following the abduction, videos circulated showing the retired general and his wife appealing for intervention to secure their freedom. The abductors reportedly made several demands as conditions for their release.

The Katsina State Government stated that the former military officer reportedly suffered from underlying health challenges while in captivity. Authorities expressed condolences to his family and praised his years of service to the country.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges facing parts of the country and renewed calls for stronger action against criminal groups responsible for kidnappings and violent attacks.

Security agencies have continued operations aimed at combating banditry and rescuing victims of abduction across affected communities in northern Nigeria.

Major General Abubakar served as Director of Defence Information and was widely known for his role in communicating military operations and national security matters during his years in service.

The circumstances surrounding the abduction and death have reignited concerns about insecurity and the risks faced by travellers on some highways in the region.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities said efforts to apprehend those responsible for the crime remain ongoing.
