The Anambra State Government has arraigned eight pastors and church leaders over allegations of staging or promoting what authorities described as “arrangee” miracles.

The case forms part of the state’s ongoing efforts to regulate religious activities and address concerns about alleged deceptive practices within some worship centres.

According to government officials, the accused persons were charged before a competent court on allegations linked to the promotion of false miracle claims intended to mislead members of the public.

Authorities stated that the prosecution followed investigations into complaints regarding activities allegedly carried out by the affected religious leaders.

The defendants, however, denied the allegations brought against them and are expected to defend themselves during the judicial proceedings.

The development has sparked debate among religious groups, legal practitioners, and members of the public, with differing views emerging on the balance between religious freedom and consumer protection.

Supporters of the government’s action argue that fraudulent practices should be addressed regardless of the sector involved, while critics have called for caution to ensure that legitimate religious activities are not unfairly targeted.

Officials maintain that the exercise is aimed at protecting citizens from exploitation and ensuring compliance with existing laws.
