Tension emerged in the Senate as lawmakers raised concerns over the Federal Government’s borrowing profile and the continued non-payment of contractors handling public projects across the country.

During a legislative session, an APC senator questioned government officials on the utilisation of loans approved by the National Assembly, expressing concern over reports that many contractors are still awaiting payment despite significant borrowing and revenue generation.

The lawmaker reportedly asked authorities to provide clear explanations on how borrowed funds have been deployed and why numerous capital projects remain underfunded.

Several senators also expressed frustration over complaints from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) regarding delays in the release of capital allocations needed to execute projects.

The debate comes amid growing concerns from contractors and industry stakeholders over outstanding debts owed for completed government projects.

Lawmakers stressed the need for greater transparency in public finance management, arguing that citizens deserve to know how borrowed funds are being spent and what impact they are having on national development.

Government officials, however, attributed some of the funding challenges to revenue constraints, procedural issues, and the need to prioritise available resources.

The Senate called for improved accountability and stronger oversight of public expenditures to ensure that approved funds are used effectively and that contractors are paid for completed work.

As of the time of filing this report, discussions on government borrowing, budget implementation, and contractor payments remain ongoing within the National Assembly.
