Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto Lead as Northwest IDP Population Nears 800,000

The Northwest region of Nigeria continues to record a high number of internally displaced persons (IDPs), with estimates placing the population close to 800,000 across affected states.

According to humanitarian and displacement tracking reports, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina States account for the largest share of displaced persons in the region, driven largely by persistent insecurity, banditry, and rural attacks.

Zamfara State remains one of the most affected, with thousands of families forced to abandon their homes due to recurring armed attacks in rural communities. Sokoto State has also seen significant displacement linked to similar security challenges.

In Katsina State, displacement trends remain widespread, although some areas have experienced fluctuations in recent data due to return movements and security interventions in certain communities.

Humanitarian agencies note that many of the displaced persons are currently staying in host communities, informal camps, or temporary shelters, where access to food, healthcare, and education remains limited.

Aid organisations have continued to call for increased support for affected populations, warning that prolonged displacement could worsen poverty, food insecurity, and social instability in the region.

Security analysts say the situation reflects the ongoing impact of rural insecurity across parts of the Northwest, where armed groups continue to disrupt farming activities and community life.

Efforts by government and security agencies to restore stability have continued, but humanitarian needs remain high across the affected states.
