‘I Did Not Kill Him’ – Ex-DSS Director Reveals What He Believes Caused Sani Abacha’s Death
By Peace Erewunmi
A former official of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has spoken publicly about the long-standing debate surrounding the death of former Head of State, Sani Abacha.
Speaking on the issue, the former DSS director rejected allegations linking him to Abacha’s death and maintained that the late military ruler died from natural medical causes rather than assassination.
According to his account, there was no evidence available to him at the time to support claims of poisoning or an organized plot. He stated that the circumstances pointed to a sudden health-related event.
Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998, died unexpectedly while in office, an event that has remained one of the most discussed moments in Nigeria’s political history.
Over the years, several theories have circulated regarding the circumstances of his death. However, official accounts at the time identified the cause as a sudden heart-related medical condition.
The recent comments by the former DSS official have renewed public discussion about historical political events and the narratives surrounding Nigeria’s transition period after Abacha’s administration.
Political observers note that despite recurring public debate, different interpretations of the event continue to exist decades after his death.
As of now, no new official investigation or government finding has been announced regarding the matter.
