The Federal Government has commenced plans to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of Nigerians residing in South Africa who have expressed a desire to return home.

The initiative comes amid concerns over the welfare and safety of some Nigerians living in the country, particularly in the wake of recurring reports of xenophobic attacks and other challenges affecting foreign nationals.

According to government officials, approximately 1,000 Nigerians have indicated interest in participating in the repatriation programme.

The exercise is expected to be coordinated by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in collaboration with other relevant government agencies responsible for migration and citizen welfare.

Authorities emphasized that the programme is voluntary and intended to provide support for Nigerians who wish to return home under safe and organized conditions.

The government stated that arrangements are being made to ensure that affected citizens receive the necessary assistance throughout the repatriation process.

Officials also reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad while maintaining diplomatic engagement with host countries on issues affecting Nigerians in the diaspora.

The development has generated discussions among stakeholders, with many expressing hope that the programme will provide relief to citizens facing difficulties overseas.
