Senate Backs Forest Guard Initiative, Condemns Rising Wave of Abductions

By Peace Erewunmi

The Senate has expressed support for the Federal Government’s proposed forest guard initiative as part of efforts to strengthen security and tackle criminal activities across the country.

Lawmakers also condemned the increasing wave of kidnappings and abductions affecting communities, schools, highways, and rural areas, describing the situation as a serious threat to national security.

During deliberations, senators noted that many criminal groups operate from remote forest locations, making effective monitoring and security of forest areas essential in the fight against banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

The Senate stated that the proposed forest guard programme could help improve surveillance, intelligence gathering, and rapid response to security threats in vulnerable regions.

Lawmakers further called for stronger collaboration among security agencies and greater investment in security infrastructure to protect lives and property.

The development comes amid growing concerns over recent cases of school abductions, attacks on communities, and kidnappings in different parts of the country.

Several senators emphasized that addressing insecurity requires a combination of improved intelligence, community engagement, and sustained security operations.

They also urged the Federal Government to continue implementing measures aimed at restoring public confidence and ensuring that citizens can live and work without fear.

The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to supporting legislative and policy initiatives designed to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and enhance public safety.

As of the time of filing this report, discussions on additional measures to combat insecurity and protect vulnerable communities were ongoing.
