Kwara Govt Files Criminal Defamation Suit Against Bukola Saraki Over Allegations Targeting Gov. AbdulRazaq’s Educational Qualifications

By Peace Erewunmi

The Kwara State Government has instituted a criminal defamation suit against former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, over statements allegedly questioning the educational qualifications of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

According to court documents, the state government accused Saraki of making and circulating statements that allegedly suggested the governor lacked the educational qualifications required to hold public office. Authorities contend that the claims were false, defamatory, and capable of damaging the governor’s reputation.

The case was filed before the Kwara State High Court, with prosecutors arguing that the statements constituted criminal defamation under applicable laws. During proceedings, the prosecution urged the court to proceed with the matter in line with due legal process.

The state government maintains that public officials, like private citizens, are entitled to legal protection against statements considered false and injurious to their reputation. Prosecutors further argued that the disputed publication was deliberately crafted in a manner capable of causing public controversy and undermining confidence in the governor.

On his part, Saraki and his supporters have previously described legal actions initiated by the state government against him as politically motivated, insisting that he has the right to comment on issues of public interest and governance.

The court has adjourned proceedings to allow for the hearing of preliminary objections and further consideration of the case. Legal observers say the outcome could have implications for the ongoing political rivalry between the former Senate President and the current administration in Kwara State.

As of the time of filing this report, no final determination has been made by the court regarding the allegations, and the matter remains before the judiciary for adjudication.
