Don’t Intercede for Arrested Criminals, Okpebholo Cautions Religious Leaders

By Peace Erewunmi

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has cautioned religious leaders against intervening on behalf of individuals arrested for criminal activities, insisting that anyone found culpable should be allowed to face the full weight of the law.

The governor gave the warning while addressing participants at the 2026 Ministers’ Conference organized by the Edo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Benin City. He stressed that his administration remains committed to combating insecurity and criminality across the state.

According to Okpebholo, security agencies have uncovered cases in which local collaborators allegedly recruit criminal elements from outside the state to carry out kidnappings and other unlawful activities. He expressed concern over the growing involvement of residents in aiding criminal networks for financial gain.

The governor urged pastors and other religious leaders not to seek special consideration for suspects arrested in connection with criminal offences, maintaining that justice must take its course without interference. He emphasized that protecting lives and property remains a top priority of his administration.

Okpebholo acknowledged that security challenges still exist in Edo State but argued that some reports circulating on social media exaggerate the situation and are intended to tarnish the image of the government. He assured residents that security agencies are working tirelessly to prevent criminals from gaining a foothold in the state.

The governor also called for continued cooperation between community leaders, religious institutions, and security agencies in the fight against crime, noting that collective efforts are necessary to achieve lasting peace and stability.

Stakeholders at the conference commended the administration’s commitment to security and development, while urging citizens to support lawful measures aimed at safeguarding communities from criminal activities.

As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Government has reiterated its resolve to pursue policies and initiatives designed to strengthen security, uphold the rule of law, and ensure the safety of residents.
