Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully rescued the widow of late Major General Rabe Abubakar from bandits’ captivity in Katsina State, days after the retired senior military officer died while being held by his abductors.

Mrs. Abubakar was freed during a military operation carried out by troops of the 17 Brigade in Tunga Village as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the area. Security forces reportedly engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle before securing her release.

According to military sources, the bandits opened fire during the confrontation and Mrs. Abubakar sustained gunshot injuries before the attackers fled under pressure from advancing troops. Soldiers subsequently rescued her, administered emergency first aid, and evacuated her for medical treatment.

Military authorities disclosed that the rescued victim is receiving medical attention and remains under close observation while healthcare personnel monitor her recovery.

The rescue comes amid intensified military operations in Katsina State following the death of Major General Abubakar while in captivity. His death had generated widespread concern and renewed calls for stronger action against bandit groups operating across parts of northwestern Nigeria.

In response to recent security incidents, the Defence Headquarters launched fresh operations aimed at tracking criminal elements, destroying their hideouts, and restoring security in affected communities. Military sources stated that ongoing operations would continue until those responsible for kidnappings and violent crimes are brought to justice.

Security officials have reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining pressure on armed groups and strengthening efforts to protect residents across the region.
