The Federal Government of Nigeria has explained why it allowed U.S. forces to conduct targeted strikes against terrorist groups in the country.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the decision is part of a strategic security cooperation with international partners, aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism. The strikes were carried out with intelligence support from Nigerian authorities and in full coordination with the government, according to the statement.

The government stressed that the operation’s goal is to protect civilians, uphold national unity, and dismantle terrorist networks responsible for recent attacks in northwest Nigeria. The strikes specifically targeted militants linked to the Islamic State (ISIS).

President Bola Tinubu’s administration emphasized that the cooperation respects Nigeria’s sovereignty and international law, while focusing on preventing further violence and ensuring the safety of all citizens.

The U.S. Africa Command also confirmed that the operation was coordinated with Nigerian authorities, reflecting a growing commitment to regional security.

The Federal Government’s disclosure comes amid public discussions on the role of foreign forces in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, with officials assuring Nigerians that the partnership is strictly tactical and aimed at long-term stability.
