Ogun Relocates Students as Methane Gas Scare Hits Ijebu-Ode School

By Peace Erewunmi

The Ogun State Government has relocated students from a school in Ijebu-Ode following renewed fears over a suspected methane gas leak in the area.

The development comes amid growing concern over recurring incidents of strange odours and gas emissions reported in parts of the town, which have previously affected several schools and led to hospitalisation of students and staff.

Authorities said the relocation was a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the lives of students while environmental and safety investigations continue into the cause of the emissions.

The state government, through relevant agencies, has reportedly deployed environmental experts and gas monitoring equipment to determine whether the recurring incidents are linked to underground methane seepage or other environmental factors.

Officials noted that previous incidents in the area had resulted in symptoms such as dizziness, breathing difficulties, and temporary collapse among affected students, prompting emergency medical response and temporary school closures.

Residents of the affected communities have expressed concern over the repeated occurrences, calling on the government to provide clear answers and long-term solutions to prevent further disruption of academic activities.

The government assured the public that it remains committed to ensuring the safety of students and will continue monitoring the situation closely in collaboration with security and environmental agencies.

As of the time of filing this report, investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the methane scare.
