How Tinubu’s Four Legacy Highway Projects Will Transform Nigeria
By Peace Erewunmi
The Federal Government’s ongoing investment in four major highway projects across Nigeria has been described as a strategic effort to reshape the nation’s transportation network, stimulate economic growth, and enhance regional connectivity.
The projects, championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, the Calabar-Abuja Super Highway, and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Road Corridor. These infrastructure initiatives are expected to improve the movement of people, goods, and services across different parts of the country.
According to government officials, the highways are designed to reduce travel time, boost trade and commerce, improve access to markets, and support industrial development. The projects are also expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction and after completion.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, one of the flagship projects, is projected to open up coastal communities, promote tourism, and facilitate economic activities along Nigeria’s southern corridor. Similarly, the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway is expected to connect major commercial centres across the northern and southern regions of the country.
Experts believe that improved road infrastructure will significantly lower transportation costs, enhance logistics efficiency, and encourage private sector investment in agriculture, manufacturing, and other productive sectors of the economy.
The Federal Government has maintained that the projects form part of a broader national development strategy aimed at addressing infrastructure deficits and positioning Nigeria as a major economic hub in Africa.
Supporters of the initiative argue that modern transportation networks are essential for national integration and sustainable development, while critics have called for transparency, proper funding, and timely execution of the projects.
As construction progresses on various segments of the highways, stakeholders continue to monitor their economic impact and long-term benefits for communities across the country.
