The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a prominent leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in connection with two separate violent incidents, one of which resulted in a man’s death.
Shamsideen Oladiti, 55, popularly known as “Shameleon,” was taken into custody on Friday for his alleged involvement in a fatal assault and a separate case of grievous bodily harm.
According to a statement from the Lagos State Police, the first incident occurred on August 28, 2025. Oladiti is accused of repeatedly striking a man in the head and face with a metallic ring, causing severe injuries. The victim of this assault succumbed to his injuries and died on September 17, 2025.
A separate complaint was filed against Oladiti on September 17, 2025, concerning another assault. While initial reports linked the incident to a dispatch rider, police have not provided specific details on the second victim.
Police sources confirm that the NURTW official is currently in custody and is being investigated on charges of murder and assault. He is expected to face prosecution upon the completion of the investigation.
The arrest has drawn attention to the persistent issue of violence associated with transport unions in Lagos, prompting a renewed call for stricter law enforcement and regulation.
