Tinubu to Minerals Strategy Group: We Must Put an End to Exploitation of Africa’s Critical Minerals

By Peace Erewunmi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for an end to the exploitation of Africa’s critical mineral resources, stressing the need for the continent to derive greater value from its abundant natural wealth through local processing, industrialisation, and fair global partnerships.

The President made the statement while addressing members of a Minerals Strategy Group, where he emphasized that Africa must move beyond being merely a supplier of raw materials to becoming a key player in the global value chain.

According to Tinubu, the growing global demand for critical minerals used in renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, batteries, and advanced manufacturing presents a unique opportunity for African countries to strengthen their economies and improve the welfare of their citizens.

He noted that for decades, many African nations have exported raw mineral resources while receiving limited economic benefits, a situation he described as unsustainable and detrimental to long-term development.

The President advocated policies that encourage value addition, local refining, technology transfer, and increased investment in mining infrastructure across the continent. He also called for stronger cooperation among African countries to protect their collective interests in the global minerals market.

Tinubu further stressed the importance of responsible mining practices, environmental sustainability, and transparency in the management of mineral resources to ensure that future generations benefit from the continent’s natural endowments.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to developing its solid minerals sector as part of broader efforts to diversify the economy, create jobs, attract investment, and reduce dependence on oil revenue.

Stakeholders at the meeting reportedly discussed strategies for positioning Africa as a competitive force in the global minerals industry while ensuring that resource-rich nations retain a fair share of the value generated from their resources.

The President expressed optimism that with the right policies and partnerships, Africa can transform its critical mineral wealth into a catalyst for industrial growth, economic prosperity, and sustainable development.
