2027: Opposition Figures Cannot Defeat Tinubu Individually – Igho Akeregha
By Peace Erewunmi
Veteran journalist and public affairs analyst, Igho Akeregha, has argued that none of Nigeria’s leading opposition politicians possesses the individual political strength required to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Akeregha assessed the evolving political landscape ahead of the next general election and suggested that the opposition faces a significant challenge if it remains fragmented. He maintained that President Tinubu continues to enjoy the advantages of incumbency, an established political structure, and a nationwide party network that would be difficult for any single opposition candidate to overcome.
According to Akeregha, prominent opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other political actors may command substantial regional support, but their individual political bases may not be sufficient to secure victory against a sitting president.
He noted that the opposition’s best chance would likely come through strategic cooperation, alliances, or a broad coalition capable of uniting diverse voting blocs across the country. Without such collaboration, he argued, votes could be split among multiple candidates, reducing the likelihood of any one challenger emerging victorious.
Akeregha also highlighted the importance of the northern voting bloc in determining the outcome of future elections. He suggested that political alignments in Northern Nigeria could significantly influence the balance of power and shape the competitiveness of the 2027 presidential contest.
The analyst stressed that elections are ultimately decided by voters and political organization rather than public sentiment alone. He advised opposition parties to focus on building strong grassroots structures, presenting clear policy alternatives, and developing a unified strategy if they hope to challenge the ruling party effectively.
Political observers note that discussions surrounding possible alliances among opposition parties have intensified in recent months, with various political stakeholders exploring options for cooperation ahead of the next election cycle. However, questions remain about whether competing ambitions and ideological differences can be reconciled.
As Nigeria gradually moves toward another election season, analysts expect debates over coalition politics, regional support, governance performance, and economic issues to dominate political discourse in the run-up to 2027.
