By Peace Erewunmi

Nigeria’s premier university, University of Ibadan, has secured a place among Africa’s top 10 higher institutions in the 2026 continental university rankings, reaffirming its status as one of the leading centres of academic excellence on the continent.

The latest rankings show that universities from South Africa and Egypt continue to dominate the top positions, reflecting their strong investment in research, innovation, infrastructure, and international collaboration.

According to the rankings, South African institutions maintained a significant presence among Africa’s highest-ranked universities, with several universities achieving outstanding performance in research output, global reputation, and academic impact. Egyptian universities also recorded impressive results, further strengthening the country’s position as a major educational hub in Africa.

The University of Ibadan emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked institution on the list, highlighting its contributions to research, postgraduate education, and academic development. The university has consistently remained one of Nigeria’s most respected institutions since its establishment in 1948.

Education analysts noted that the rankings assess factors such as research quality, citations, international outlook, teaching standards, industry partnerships, and overall institutional performance. These indicators are used to evaluate how universities compare both regionally and globally.

While the University of Ibadan’s inclusion among Africa’s top 10 institutions has been widely welcomed, experts have emphasized the need for increased funding, improved research facilities, and stronger support for innovation across Nigerian universities to enhance their competitiveness on the global stage.

Stakeholders in the education sector argue that sustained investment in higher education remains essential for producing skilled graduates, advancing scientific discoveries, and supporting national development.

The ranking serves as a reminder of the growing competition among African universities as institutions across the continent continue efforts to improve academic standards, research productivity, and global visibility.

The University of Ibadan’s performance is expected to further boost its reputation and attract greater interest from students, researchers, and academic partners within and outside Africa.
