Nigeria Customs Reveals Why Intelligence Sharing Is Key to Tackling Security Threats
By Peace Erewunmi
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has emphasized that intelligence sharing and inter-agency collaboration remain critical tools in addressing evolving security threats confronting the country. The agency stated that modern security challenges require coordinated responses among security institutions rather than isolated operations.
The position was reiterated during a national study tour by participants of the Defence Intelligence Officers’ Course 22/2026 from the Defence Intelligence College, who visited the Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service. During the engagement, Customs officials highlighted the importance of intelligence-driven operations in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and protecting national security.
According to the Service, threats such as terrorism, banditry, arms smuggling, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and other transnational crimes have become increasingly sophisticated, making timely intelligence gathering and information exchange essential. Customs officials noted that no single agency possesses all the resources or information required to combat these threats effectively.
The NCS stressed that intelligence sharing enables security agencies to identify emerging threats early, coordinate responses, prevent criminal activities, and improve operational effectiveness. Officials explained that collaborative intelligence systems help agencies track suspicious movements across borders and disrupt criminal networks before they can execute their plans.
Customs further noted that Nigeria’s extensive land and maritime borders require constant surveillance and cooperation among agencies responsible for border management. By sharing intelligence, agencies can strengthen border security while facilitating legitimate trade and travel.
The agency also highlighted the growing role of technology in intelligence operations, including data analysis, surveillance systems, and information management platforms that enhance decision-making and operational coordination. Officials said modern security environments demand intelligence-led approaches rather than reliance solely on physical enforcement measures.
Participants in the study tour were encouraged to deepen cooperation among Nigeria’s intelligence and security institutions to improve national preparedness against emerging threats. The engagement formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen professional capacity and promote collaboration among agencies involved in national security.
Security analysts have long argued that effective intelligence sharing is crucial to tackling complex threats in Nigeria. Recent defence and security partnerships involving Nigeria have similarly emphasized intelligence cooperation as a key component of counter-terrorism and national security strategies.
The Nigeria Customs Service reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led operations and closer cooperation with relevant agencies, maintaining that stronger partnerships remain essential for protecting Nigeria’s borders, economy, and citizens from growing security challenges.
