Governor AbdulRazaq Backs ₦100,000 Minimum Wage Proposal

By Peace Erewunmi

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has expressed support for a proposed ₦100,000 national minimum wage as part of efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerian workers amid rising living costs.

AbdulRazaq, who also serves as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), said state governors are engaging with the Federal Government and organised labour to arrive at a wage structure that is fair to workers and sustainable for government finances.

According to the governor, the proposal is informed by current economic realities, including inflation, increasing food prices, transportation costs, and other pressures affecting households across the country.

He noted that while workers deserve improved remuneration, policymakers must also consider the financial capacity of states to meet salary obligations and continue delivering essential public services.

The governor explained that discussions are ongoing to strike a balance between enhancing workers’ purchasing power and ensuring that governments can sustain development projects and other commitments.

The proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage has generated nationwide discussion among labour groups, policymakers, and economic stakeholders, with many calling for salaries that better reflect the current cost of living.

Nigeria’s current national minimum wage stands at ₦70,000, while some states have adopted higher wage structures for their workers.

As of the time of filing this report, consultations between the Federal Government, state governments, and organised labour on the proposed wage review were still ongoing.
