Students Abducted as Gunmen Attack Federal University in Nasarawa, Police Rescue One

By Peace Erewunmi

Suspected kidnappers have abducted three students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) in Nasarawa State after attacking an off-campus student residence. The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the incident and said one of the victims was rescued during an ongoing search-and-rescue operation.

According to the police, the attack occurred on the night of Tuesday, July 7, at a students’ lodge located in a bushy area along Awe Road, close to the university’s temporary campus. Armed men reportedly stormed the residence and forcefully took three students before fleeing the scene.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Nasarawa State, SP Ramhan Nansel, said security operatives responded immediately after receiving a distress call from the university’s Chief Security Officer. During the operation, one of the abducted students was rescued, while efforts are continuing to secure the release of the remaining victims.

The Commissioner of Police has ordered an intensive manhunt for the kidnappers, deploying tactical teams, military personnel, local vigilantes, and other security agencies to comb nearby forests and possible escape routes. Authorities expressed confidence that the remaining students would be rescued unharmed.

The Federal University of Lafia has urged students to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies while investigations continue. University authorities also appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist in locating the abducted students.

The incident has renewed concerns over the security of students living in off-campus accommodation, particularly in areas with limited security presence. Stakeholders have called for stronger collaboration between universities, host communities, and security agencies to improve surveillance and protect students from criminal attacks.

The police assured residents that every available resource is being deployed to rescue the remaining abductees and apprehend those responsible. They also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could hinder ongoing rescue efforts or create unnecessary panic.
