By Peace Erewunmi
Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, has paid glowing tribute to Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka on his 92nd birthday, describing him as “one of the brightly shining stars any race could have” and a source of pride to Nigeria, Africa, and the global literary community.
In a congratulatory message issued to commemorate Soyinka’s birthday on July 13, Fasoranti praised the renowned playwright, poet, essayist, and human rights advocate for his remarkable contributions to literature, democracy, justice, and nation-building. The statement was conveyed by Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi.
Fasoranti described Soyinka as “a pride to the Yoruba race, a pride of Nigeria, a pride of Africa,” adding that his positive influence transcends ethnic, national, and racial boundaries. He expressed gratitude that such an accomplished personality emerged from Nigeria and has continued to make meaningful contributions to humanity throughout his lifetime.
Reflecting on Soyinka’s illustrious career, the Afenifere leader noted that the Nobel Laureate—popularly known as “Kongi” after one of the characters in his famous works—has excelled as a playwright, novelist, poet, essayist, actor, composer, director, teacher, and public affairs commentator. He also commended Soyinka’s lifelong commitment to justice, democracy, and good governance.
Fasoranti said Soyinka’s 92nd birthday provides another opportunity to celebrate a man whose intellectual brilliance and courage have inspired generations of writers, scholars, and advocates of freedom around the world. He described the literary icon as a rare individual whose life continues to illuminate the path for others.
The elder statesman prayed for God to grant Soyinka many more years in good health and strength, expressing hope that he would live beyond 100 years while continuing to contribute to national development and the advancement of humanity. He also wished that Nigeria would become a country worthy of the ideals Soyinka has consistently championed throughout his life.
Professor Wole Soyinka, born on July 13, 1934, became the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. Over several decades, he has earned global recognition for his literary achievements and his unwavering advocacy for democracy, human rights, and freedom of expression.
The birthday tribute adds to the numerous messages of goodwill from political leaders, literary figures, and admirers across Nigeria and beyond, celebrating Soyinka’s enduring legacy as one of Africa’s greatest intellectuals and cultural icons.
