Notorious Bandit Kingpin Sani Yellow Reportedly Killed in Zamfara

A notorious bandit commander identified as Sani Yellow has reportedly been killed in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State, marking a significant development in the ongoing fight against armed banditry in Nigeria’s North-West. Reports of his death emerged over the weekend, although conflicting accounts have surfaced regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to local and security sources, Sani Yellow was widely regarded as one of the most feared bandit leaders operating across Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru, and neighbouring local government areas in Zamfara State. He was accused of masterminding numerous attacks on rural communities, kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, and other violent crimes that contributed to prolonged insecurity in the region.
One account, cited by security publication Zagazola Makama, claims that Yellow was shot dead at Dan Jibga Market by armed men believed to be loyal to rival bandit kingpin Dogo Gide. Sources alleged that the attack occurred in broad daylight during what appeared to be a power struggle among rival criminal factions competing for influence and territory.
A separate account, however, attributes his death to a recent counter-banditry operation carried out by security personnel alongside members of the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes deployed to support military operations in Zamfara State. According to this version, Yellow was killed during an armed confrontation with the joint security team.
Videos circulating on social media, and reviewed by several news organisations, appear to show the lifeless body believed to be that of Sani Yellow being dragged through a street after his death. However, authorities have not officially authenticated the footage.
As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement confirming the exact circumstances of Yellow’s death. Efforts by journalists to obtain confirmation from military authorities were reportedly unsuccessful, leaving some uncertainty over which account is accurate.
Security analysts note that the death of a high-profile bandit commander could weaken criminal networks operating in parts of Zamfara. However, they also caution that bandit groups are often fragmented, with multiple commanders capable of assuming leadership, meaning the overall security situation will depend on sustained security operations and continued pressure on armed groups.
The reported killing comes amid intensified efforts by Nigerian security agencies and local vigilante groups to combat banditry across the North-West, where thousands of people have been killed or displaced in recent years due to attacks on rural communities.
