FG to Establish Buhari Foundation One Year After Former President’s Death

By Peace Erewunmi

The Federal Government has announced plans to establish the Muhammadu Buhari Foundation to preserve the legacy of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, one year after his passing. The initiative is expected to serve as a platform for promoting the values, leadership principles, and public service ideals associated with the late president.

The announcement comes as Nigeria marks the first anniversary of Buhari’s death on July 13, 2026. Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 and previously as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, died in London on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.

According to government officials, the proposed foundation will focus on preserving Buhari’s contributions to national development through programmes that promote good governance, integrity, leadership, public policy research, youth development, and national unity. Details regarding its legal structure, funding, and governing board are expected to be released in due course.

The planned foundation forms part of activities organised to commemorate the late president’s first remembrance anniversary. Government officials, political associates, family members, and supporters are expected to participate in memorial events celebrating Buhari’s years of public service and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently described Buhari as a leader whose commitment to discipline, anti-corruption, and national service left a lasting mark on the country. The administration says the proposed foundation will help preserve historical records of Buhari’s leadership while supporting initiatives that reflect his ideals.

Political observers note that memorial foundations established in honour of former leaders often serve as platforms for research, policy dialogue, leadership development, educational programmes, and charitable activities. Similar institutions exist in several countries to document the legacies of past presidents and statesmen.

The Federal Government stated that additional information on the Buhari Foundation, including its objectives, operational framework, and planned activities, will be made public as implementation progresses. Officials expressed the hope that the initiative would contribute to national development while preserving the memory and public service record of the late former president.
