Presidency Says Tinubu’s Retention of Shettima Reflects Trust, Loyalty and Continuity

By Peace Erewunmi

The Presidency has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election reflects his confidence in his deputy and demonstrates a commitment to continuity in governance. The position was expressed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, in an article titled “2027: Tinubu-Shettima and the Politics of Loyalty, Capacity, Continuity.”

According to Nkwocha, the President’s decision has put an end to months of speculation over Shettima’s place on the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket. He argued that retaining the Vice President reinforces the partnership that delivered victory for the APC in the 2023 general election and denies political opponents the opportunity to exploit perceived divisions within the administration.

Nkwocha described Shettima as a loyal and dependable deputy who has consistently supported the administration’s policies and reforms. He noted that the Vice President has played key roles in national economic discussions through the National Economic Council (NEC) and has worked to advance the Renewed Hope Agenda while maintaining unity within the government.

He further argued that the Tinubu-Shettima ticket was a deliberate political strategy that combines Tinubu’s political influence in the South with Shettima’s support base in the North-East. According to him, although the Muslim-Muslim ticket generated debate ahead of the 2023 election, the APC maintained that its choice was based on competence, experience, and shared political values.

Nkwocha added that continuity is particularly important for a president seeking re-election, saying an experienced running mate who understands the administration’s policies and governance style provides greater stability than introducing a new deputy at such a stage. He also argued that the decision sends a message that loyalty, competence, and commitment are recognised and rewarded within the ruling party.

The Presidency’s position was echoed by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who described Shettima as a dependable partner whose re-nomination reflects the President’s trust and confidence. APC leaders in the North-East also welcomed the decision, describing it as recognition of the region’s strategic importance and of Shettima’s contributions to the administration.

The announcement comes as political parties continue consultations and preparations ahead of the 2027 general election. While the APC has presented the decision as one aimed at promoting stability and continuity, the party will still be expected to campaign on its record in office as the election approaches.
