The United States Consulate General in Lagos and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to combat sextortion, cybercrime, and other transnational financial crimes through enhanced intelligence and information sharing.

The commitment was made during a high-level visit by a delegation from the U.S. Consulate and the FBI to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja. The meeting focused on expanding cooperation in investigating and prosecuting crimes that increasingly transcend national borders, particularly cyber-enabled fraud and online sexual extortion.

According to the U.S. delegation, sextortion has become a growing global threat, especially among young internet users, with criminal networks exploiting digital platforms to extort victims for money or additional explicit content. The officials stressed that addressing such crimes requires close international cooperation, intelligence exchange, and coordinated law enforcement operations.

Speaking during the meeting, representatives of the U.S. Consulate and the FBI commended the EFCC for its ongoing efforts in tackling cybercrime and financial fraud. They expressed readiness to deepen existing partnerships through joint investigations, specialised training, technical assistance, and improved information-sharing mechanisms.

The Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, welcomed the renewed collaboration, describing international partnerships as critical to addressing sophisticated financial crimes that often involve multiple jurisdictions. He noted that many cybercriminals operate across borders, making cooperation between law enforcement agencies essential for successful investigations and prosecutions.

Olukoyede reiterated the commission’s commitment to protecting both Nigerian citizens and the international community from financial crimes. He explained that the EFCC has continued to strengthen its cybercrime units, deploy digital forensic tools, and work closely with foreign partners to dismantle organised criminal networks.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of public awareness in preventing sextortion and online fraud. Officials encouraged internet users to exercise caution when interacting with strangers online, avoid sharing intimate content, and promptly report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.

Both parties agreed that improving intelligence sharing, capacity building, and operational coordination would significantly enhance efforts to investigate and prosecute offenders involved in cyber-enabled financial crimes. They also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular engagement to respond effectively to emerging threats in the digital space.

The renewed partnership reflects the growing international effort to combat cybercrime, financial fraud, and online exploitation. Authorities expressed confidence that stronger collaboration between the U.S. and Nigeria would improve the detection, prevention, and prosecution of transnational criminal activities while enhancing public safety and digital security.
