2027: Peter Obi Raises Alarm Over Personal Attacks, Says Campaign Should Focus on Issues
By Peace Erewunmi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate and a leading opposition figure ahead of the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over what he described as increasing personal attacks against him, urging political actors to focus on national issues rather than character assassination. He said public discourse should centre on policies and solutions to Nigeria’s challenges instead of personal insults and intimidation.
Obi made the remarks amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, criticism is an essential part of democracy, but personal attacks, threats, and attempts to intimidate political opponents undermine democratic values and distract from meaningful conversations about governance.
The former Anambra State governor alleged that his life was under threat because of his political views and public comments on national issues. He questioned whether expressing opinions on governance should expose any citizen or political leader to intimidation, adding that he remains committed to speaking out despite the challenges.
Obi called on Nigerians to reject politics based on insults, misinformation, and hatred. Instead, he urged political leaders and supporters to engage in constructive debates on the economy, security, education, healthcare, and other issues affecting citizens. According to him, elections should be contests of ideas rather than personal hostility.
He also appealed to security agencies to ensure that all political actors, regardless of party affiliation, are able to participate freely in the democratic process without fear of harassment or violence. He stressed that protecting political freedoms is essential to maintaining public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
Political observers note that as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, exchanges between political parties and leading aspirants have become increasingly heated. Analysts have therefore urged all stakeholders to promote issue-based campaigns and avoid rhetoric capable of escalating political tensions.
Obi concluded by reaffirming his commitment to peaceful democratic engagement, stating that his focus remains on advocating policies that improve the lives of Nigerians rather than responding to personal attacks. He encouraged citizens to evaluate political leaders based on their ideas, integrity, and capacity to deliver good governance.
