Court Convicts Two Fake EFCC Officials

By Peace Erewunmi

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Jikwoyi, Abuja, has convicted two men, Haruna Mamuda and Sadiq Umar, for impersonating officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and defrauding members of the public.

Justice M. Zubairu found the duo guilty on a five-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy, impersonation and unlawful representation as EFCC operatives. The prosecution established that the convicts falsely presented themselves as anti-graft officials to deceive unsuspecting victims for financial gain.

The court held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction of both defendants. Following the judgment, Justice Zubairu adjourned the matter to July 17, 2026, for sentencing.

The EFCC welcomed the conviction, describing it as a warning to individuals who impersonate law enforcement officers to commit fraud. The Commission reiterated its commitment to prosecuting offenders and protecting Nigerians from criminal schemes carried out in its name.

The anti-graft agency also urged members of the public to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the Commission and to promptly report suspected cases of impersonation or fraud to the appropriate authorities.
