Fresh indications of a possible realignment within Nigeria’s opposition political landscape have emerged following a meeting between the 2023 Accord Party presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, and his Social Democratic Party (SDP) counterpart, Prince Adewole Adebayo, in Abuja.

The meeting formed part of a series of high-level consultations involving opposition leaders and pro-democracy advocates ahead of the 2027 general election. The discussions are said to be focused on exploring areas of collaboration, strengthening democratic institutions and promoting governance reforms.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, the consultations also addressed the need for greater cooperation among political actors who share similar democratic ideals and are committed to providing Nigerians with a credible alternative political platform. The talks come amid growing interest in possible alliances within the opposition.

The meeting follows reports of similar engagements between Hashim and other opposition figures, including African Action Congress (AAC) leader Omoyele Sowore. Political observers believe the consultations could influence future coalition-building efforts as parties begin positioning for the 2027 elections.

Although no formal coalition or merger has been announced, the participants described the discussions as strategic and forward-looking. Stakeholders expect further consultations with political leaders, civil society organisations and pro-democracy groups in the coming months as efforts to strengthen opposition cooperation continue ahead of the next general election.
