Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the payment of ₦3.1 billion in compensation to 331 property owners whose buildings were demolished to pave the way for major public infrastructure projects across the state.

The compensation was presented during a ceremony in Lagos, where the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that affected residents receive fair and timely compensation whenever land is acquired for projects in the public interest.

Sanwo-Olu stated that the payment reflects the government’s resolve to balance infrastructure development with the protection of citizens’ rights. He noted that while urban renewal projects are necessary to improve transportation, housing and other public services, they must be carried out with fairness and compassion.

The governor explained that the demolished properties were affected by road expansion, urban regeneration and other strategic development initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for Lagos residents. He urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the compensation while assuring them that the government remains committed to transparency throughout the acquisition process.

He also reiterated his administration’s determination to continue investing in infrastructure that supports economic growth and sustainable urban development, stressing that Lagos will remain focused on building a modern, resilient and inclusive city while respecting the rights of property owners.
