The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled a new system designed to help banks and telecommunications companies combat fraud and strengthen digital security.

The platform, known as the Telecoms Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS), was introduced at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja as part of efforts to address rising cases of financial and identity-related fraud in Nigeria.

According to the NCC, the system will enable banks and telecom operators to verify phone numbers and assess associated risks before granting access to sensitive services. This is expected to help curb fraudulent activities linked to SIM swaps, recycled numbers, and improper registrations.

The Commission noted that mobile numbers have become a critical part of digital identity, especially in banking transactions and online communications, making them a major target for fraudsters.

With the introduction of TIRMS, financial institutions and telecom providers will be better equipped to detect suspicious activities and prevent unauthorized access to customer accounts.

The NCC emphasized that the initiative will enhance collaboration between the telecom and financial sectors, improve consumer protection, and boost confidence in Nigeria’s digital economy.

Industry experts have described the move as a significant step toward reducing cybercrime and strengthening trust in electronic transactions across the country.
