The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has unveiled a long-term strategy aimed at reducing Lagos State’s dependence on traditional waste dumps by expanding recycling, resource recovery and modern waste processing infrastructure. The initiative forms part of efforts to build a more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management system.

Speaking on the new approach, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said conventional dumpsites are no longer a sustainable solution for a rapidly growing megacity like Lagos. He explained that the agency is investing in Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), Transfer Loading Stations (TLSs), biodigesters, composting plants and waste-to-energy projects to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill sites.

According to Gbadegesin, the strategy is designed to transform waste into valuable resources through recycling, composting and energy generation, while also creating jobs and supporting the circular economy. He noted that reducing the amount of waste disposed of at dumpsites would extend the lifespan of existing facilities and improve environmental sustainability.

The LAWMA boss also stressed that public participation remains essential to the success of the initiative. He urged residents to separate waste at source, patronise licensed Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste collection and actively support recycling programmes across the state.

LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to modernising waste management in Lagos through innovation, infrastructure development and environmental education, with the goal of creating a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city for present and future generations.
