Peter Ameh Questions Atiku’s Southern Strategy Ahead of 2027 Presidential Election
By Peace Erewunmi
Former National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Peter Ameh, has questioned the electoral pathway of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election, arguing that winning the presidency would be difficult without substantial support from Southern Nigeria.
Speaking on the political landscape ahead of the polls, Ameh reportedly asked how any presidential candidate could hope to emerge victorious without securing significant votes across the 17 states in Southern Nigeria. He maintained that national elections require broad geographical acceptance rather than reliance on support from a particular region.
Ameh stressed that Nigeria’s constitutional requirements for electing a president demand widespread national backing, making cross-regional appeal a crucial factor in any successful presidential campaign. He argued that political parties and candidates must build inclusive coalitions capable of attracting voters from all parts of the country.
His remarks come as political consultations and realignments continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, with major parties and opposition figures positioning themselves for the presidential contest. Several political leaders have continued to debate the electoral strengths and possible alliances that could shape the outcome of the election.
Neither Atiku Abubakar nor his political camp had officially responded to Ameh’s comments at the time of this report. Political observers expect discussions over regional support, coalition-building and electoral strategy to intensify as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
