Otubanjo: North Reassured Tinubu Cannot Seek a Third Presidential Term

Research Professor at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Femi Otubanjo, has said the North is reassured that if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secures a second term in office, he will not be constitutionally eligible to seek a third term.
Speaking on Nigeria’s political outlook ahead of the 2027 general election, Otubanjo argued that the constitutional two-term limit for presidents provides assurance to political stakeholders that power will rotate after the completion of Tinubu’s second tenure, should he be re-elected. He said this consideration is influencing political calculations across different regions of the country.
Otubanjo also noted that the constitutional provision barring any individual from being elected president more than twice remains a key safeguard for Nigeria’s democracy and contributes to political stability by ensuring regular leadership transition.
His remarks come amid increasing political consultations, endorsements and coalition-building ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as major political parties and prospective candidates continue to position themselves for the contest.
