Over 500 Kidnap Victims Still Held in Northern Forests Despite Security Operations

Despite ongoing military operations and government efforts to combat insecurity, more than 500 kidnapped victims are reportedly still being held captive by terrorists and bandits in forests across northern Nigeria. The victims are believed to have been abducted in separate attacks across states including Borno, Kaduna, Kwara and Zamfara.
Many of the abductees have remained in captivity for several months, with families describing harsh living conditions, uncertainty and continued ransom demands. Some victims were reportedly taken during mass attacks on communities, schools and places of worship, while others were kidnapped along highways or from their homes.
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) have expressed concern over the prolonged captivity of the victims, urging the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and strengthen intelligence gathering to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region.
Security experts have also stressed the importance of closer collaboration between local communities and security agencies, noting that timely intelligence from residents can play a crucial role in locating kidnappers’ hideouts and securing the safe release of victims. Recent rescue operations in parts of the country have demonstrated the value of community cooperation in tackling insecurity.
The continued captivity of hundreds of Nigerians highlights the persistent security challenges facing the country, with affected families calling for more decisive action to secure the release of their loved ones and restore safety to vulnerable communities.
