Stop Vandalising Railway Installations, NRC Boss Cries Out

By Erewunmi Peace

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhiria, has appealed to Nigerians to desist from vandalising railway infrastructure across the country, describing the act as “economic sabotage.”

Okhiria raised the alarm following reports of increasing vandalisation of railway electrical and signalling installations, particularly along the Lagos–Ibadan Standard Gauge corridor.

According to him, the activities of vandals have disrupted train operations and endangered passengers’ safety. He noted that some of the damaged installations were key components of the newly built railway system.

“These acts of vandalism not only cause delays and financial losses but also endanger lives. The public must see these installations as national assets meant to serve everyone,” Okhiria said.

The NRC boss confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with recent vandalism incidents and warned that such actions will henceforth be treated as serious offences.

He called on security agencies, community leaders, and residents living around railway lines to report suspicious activities and protect the facilities within their areas.

Okhiria also urged Nigerians to take ownership of the infrastructure, stressing that maintaining a safe and efficient rail transport system is a shared responsibility.

Nigeria has witnessed several cases of railway vandalism in recent years, including the removal of cables, bolts, and signalling equipment along major routes. Authorities say these actions undermine the federal government’s investment in modern railway systems and hinder economic growth.
