Former presidential adviser and political activist Najatu Muhammad has expressed doubts about the electoral prospects of Peter Obi, saying the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) may find it difficult to secure widespread support across Northern Nigeria in the 2027 presidential election.

According to Najatu, many of the votes Obi received in parts of the North during previous elections came largely from Igbo communities resident in the region rather than from the broader Northern electorate. She argued that winning the presidency requires building a broad national coalition that cuts across ethnic, religious and regional divides.

She maintained that presidential candidates seeking victory in Nigeria must appeal to voters in every part of the country by presenting policies capable of addressing the nation’s economic, security and governance challenges. Najatu added that broad-based political acceptance remains crucial to electoral success.

Her remarks have sparked mixed reactions among political observers and supporters of various parties, with many pointing to differing interpretations of voting patterns from previous elections. The comments come as political parties and leading aspirants continue consultations and alliance-building ahead of the 2027 general election.
