President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday received the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, and members of the Olubadan-in-Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he urged state governors to prioritise road construction, security and projects that directly improve the lives of citizens over costly flyovers and other “white elephant” projects.

Addressing the traditional ruler, Tinubu called on the former Oyo State governor to use his influence in advising governors across the country to focus on infrastructure that delivers practical economic value.

«”Instead of building flyovers where there is no significant traffic, let us do more to enhance the quality of life and support security agencies to reach difficult areas,” the President said.»

Speaking on security, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. He referenced the recent rescue of abducted children and teachers in Orire, Oyo State, stating that the government refused to negotiate with the kidnappers or pay ransom despite pressure from the criminals.

According to the President, intelligence gathered by security agencies enabled authorities to map the forest where the victims were held, leading to a successful rescue operation. He disclosed that the abductors demanded the release of members of their criminal gang already in custody in addition to ransom, but the government rejected the request.

Tinubu also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, revealing that the Nigerian Army is being expanded from eight to twelve divisions to improve response time and enhance the fight against terrorism and banditry nationwide.

The meeting formed part of continued consultations between the Presidency and traditional institutions on national development, security and governance.
