Senator Adams Oshiomhole, former Governor of Edo State and representative of Edo North, has criticised the presidential ambition of Peter Obi, describing the former Anambra State governor as a trader whose approach does not reflect the long-term planning required to lead Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on TVC’s Beyond the Headlines, Oshiomhole argued that traders often focus on short-term calculations and quick returns, while national development requires long-term planning, patience and investments that may take years before producing results.

The APC chieftain claimed that Obi’s business background, which he described as being focused on importation, does not align with the kind of industrial thinking needed to transform Nigeria’s economy. He contrasted this with what he described as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approach of taking difficult decisions aimed at achieving long-term economic benefits.

Oshiomhole also defended the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, saying the government inherited a difficult economic situation and that some policies may require short-term sacrifices before their benefits become visible.

His comments followed recent criticisms from Peter Obi, who has challenged the performance of the Tinubu administration and argued that Nigeria requires a different leadership approach ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The remarks have generated debate among Nigerians, with supporters of both political figures offering different views on whether business experience strengthens or limits a leader’s ability to govern a country.
