By Peace Erewunmi

A Kebbi State High Court Judge, Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza, has regained his freedom after spending one week in the custody of his abductors, bringing relief to his family, the judiciary and residents of the state.

Justice Bunza was kidnapped from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area by armed assailants in the early hours of last week. His abduction sparked widespread concern and prompted calls for intensified security efforts to secure his release.

Confirming the development, the Kebbi State Police Command said the judge returned home safely on Monday. Police spokesperson SP Bashir Usman disclosed that although the kidnappers demanded a ransom, no ransom was paid before the judge regained his freedom.

The police did not provide details on the circumstances surrounding the judge’s release but assured the public that efforts are ongoing to identify, track and arrest those responsible for the abduction. Security agencies have intensified investigations and operations aimed at bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The release of Justice Bunza has been welcomed by members of the judiciary, legal practitioners and residents of Kebbi State, many of whom had expressed concern over his safety during the period of captivity.

The incident is the latest in a series of kidnapping cases affecting parts of northern Nigeria, highlighting the persistent security challenges confronting the region despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb banditry and related crimes.
