The Ogun State Government has ordered an immediate environmental clean-up in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, while introducing stricter regulatory measures for battery recycling companies operating in the community following concerns over lead pollution and public health risks.

Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya said the government remains committed to protecting residents from environmental hazards associated with used lead-acid battery recycling. He disclosed that operators must comply with tougher environmental standards, including proper waste management, pollution control systems and regular environmental audits, or face sanctions.

The state also directed affected companies to participate in a comprehensive clean-up of contaminated sites and ensure that their operations meet approved environmental and health standards before resuming full activities. The move follows earlier enforcement actions that led to the closure of several recycling facilities over alleged violations of environmental regulations.

Authorities further warned that companies operating with obsolete equipment or failing to adopt cleaner technologies would not be allowed to continue operations. The government reiterated that safeguarding the health of Ogijo residents takes precedence over economic considerations and that there would be no compromise on compliance with environmental laws.

The renewed measures are part of broader efforts by the Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and other stakeholders, to address longstanding concerns over lead contamination linked to battery recycling activities in Ogijo and restore a safer environment for the host communities.
