Akpabio: Electoral Act Amendment Will Be Ready Ahead of 2027 Polls
By Erewunmi Peace
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act will be concluded and ready in good time before the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio’s assurance comes in response to concerns raised by civil society groups, including the AdvoKC Foundation, which urged the National Assembly to reconvene early and prioritise the passage of the Electoral Bill 2025 to ensure a robust legal framework for the upcoming polls.
The Senate President’s position was conveyed through his Special Adviser on Constitutional Matters, Dr. Monday Ubani (SAN).
Ubani stated that the Senate is prepared to resume work on the bill immediately after its recess and is confident that the legislative process can be concluded swiftly.
“With the House of Representatives having already passed its version of the bill, the Senate expects to complete its consideration, secure presidential assent, and ensure all provisions are in place well before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issues the official notice for the 2027 elections,” Ubani explained.
The assurance comes amid warnings from advocacy groups that delays in amending the law could affect preparations for the 2027 elections, potentially undermining electoral credibility if not completed early.
Akpabio and the Senate have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the legal framework for Nigeria’s elections is timely, transparent, and credible, reassuring citizens and stakeholders that the Electoral Act amendment will be in place ahead of the next general polls.
