The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has disbursed over ₦2.4 billion to families of fallen police officers, providing long-awaited financial support and clearing outstanding welfare claims.

The payment, which benefits 1,075 families, was made at the Force Headquarters in Abuja under the Nigeria Police Force welfare scheme. It covers both the Group Life Assurance Scheme and the IGP Family Welfare Scheme.

According to police authorities, the disbursement also addressed a backlog of unpaid claims dating from 2018 to 2026, bringing relief to many families who had been awaiting compensation for years.

Speaking at the event, the IGP emphasized the importance of supporting the families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. He described the initiative as part of ongoing efforts to improve police welfare and restore confidence within the force.

The development has been widely seen as a significant step toward honoring the sacrifices of fallen officers while strengthening institutional accountability.

Observers note that the move could boost morale among serving personnel and demonstrate a renewed commitment to the well-being of police officers and their families.
