₦12.3 Billion Worth of ‘Loud’ Recovered by NDLEA in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded one of its biggest drug seizures of the year after intercepting 4,959 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, valued at approximately ₦12.397 billion at the Apapa Port in Lagos. The operation forms part of the agency’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking networks operating through Nigeria’s ports and border corridors.
According to the NDLEA, the illicit consignment was recovered during a joint examination conducted by operatives of the Apapa Strategic Command, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, and other security agencies at the Apapa Port Complex. The agency disclosed that the shipment had been under surveillance for more than four weeks before it was finally intercepted on June 23, 2026.
Investigations revealed that the 40-foot container carrying the drugs originated from Toronto, Canada, and passed through Montreal and Morocco before arriving in Lagos. The container reportedly also contained vehicles, which investigators believe may have been used to conceal the illicit cargo.
NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi stated that the successful operation demonstrates the agency’s growing intelligence and surveillance capabilities in tracking transnational drug trafficking syndicates. He noted that the seizure prevented a significant quantity of narcotics from reaching the streets and potentially harming thousands of people.
In addition to the Apapa Port seizure, the agency announced several other operations across the country, including the arrest of a businesswoman at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos with 7.5 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a specially modified suitcase. NDLEA also uncovered a criminal network accused of planting illicit drugs in the luggage of unsuspecting interstate travelers.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers involved in the operation and urged commands nationwide to sustain the momentum in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse. He emphasized that the agency remains committed to disrupting criminal networks and protecting communities from the dangers associated with illicit substances.
The latest seizure highlights Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking, particularly through major entry points such as Apapa Port, one of the country’s busiest maritime facilities. Security experts believe enhanced collaboration among law enforcement agencies will be crucial in preventing similar attempts in the future.
Authorities have indicated that investigations are continuing to identify all individuals and organizations connected to the shipment, while efforts are underway to prosecute those found culpable under Nigeria’s drug control laws.
