NDLEA Warns of Rising Drug Abuse Among Students, Urges Swift Action Ahead of Lagos Local Government Election.

By Erewunmi Peace

As Lagos gears up for its upcoming local government elections, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has raised a red flag over the alarming rise in drug abuse among students, warning that Nigeria’s future leadership is at risk if decisive actions are not taken.

Speaking during a youth sensitization program organized in collaboration with local community leaders and education stakeholders, NDLEA Lagos State Commander, [Insert Name], emphasized that the battle against narcotics must extend beyond enforcement to include education, rehabilitation, and active community involvement.

“Our young people are the engine of tomorrow’s leadership,” the commander stated. “If we lose them to drugs, we lose our future. The situation is urgent and demands a unified response from parents, schools, religious institutions, and the government.”

The agency reported a significant increase in cases involving secondary and tertiary school students caught with cannabis, codeine, tramadol, and other synthetic substances over the past year. Experts attribute the surge to peer pressure, social media influence, and easy access to illicit drugs in urban areas.

With local elections approaching, stakeholders are urging candidates to prioritize youth-focused health and education reforms in their manifestos. Civil society groups also called for the integration of drug education into school curricula and more youth empowerment programs.

In response, some local government aspirants have begun outlining strategies for community drug surveillance, partnerships with NGOs, and funding for rehabilitation centers.

“This is not just a health issue — it’s a governance issue,” said [Insert Youth Leader/Activist]. “We need elected leaders who will not only talk about the future but also protect it.”

The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to intensifying school outreach programs, enhancing patrol operations, and collaborating with tech firms to monitor online drug trafficking trends.

As the elections draw near, voters are being encouraged to support candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to youth welfare and public health.
