The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a significant upward review of Nigerian passport fees, which will take effect from September 1, 2025.
According to a statement released by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the new charges will apply to passports issued within the country. Under the revised structure:
₦100,000 for a 32-page passport with 5-year validity
₦200,000 for a 64-page passport with 10-year validity
Fees for Nigerians applying from the diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for 32-page and $230 for 64-page passports.
Reason for the Fee Increase
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, explained that the adjustment aims to enhance passport service delivery, curb corruption, and end unnecessary delays.
“We want a system where Nigerians can get their passports within one week of enrollment. This review will help us achieve faster, corruption-free processing,” he stated.
The NIS also noted that the additional revenue will support the new centralized personalization system, which will enable the service to print and deliver passports within 24 hours of approval.
Background and Reactions
This is the second major increase in over a year, as the government continues to reform the immigration system. Labour and civil society groups have urged the government to ensure that the new rates translate to better service delivery and zero middlemen.
What Nigerians Should Know
The new fees take effect on September 1, 2025.
Old rates will no longer apply for applications submitted after August 31, 2025.
Payments must be made only through official NIS channels to avoid fraud.
